malawi institute of legal education

Established under Section 14 of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act, the Malawi Institute of Legal Education (MILE) is a government agency whose mandate is to provide post graduate legal training in practical law courses to persons who have studied law for purposes of the practice of law in Malawi. Functions of MILE are subject to general or special directions of the Malawi Council for Legal Education, (Council). MILE is the designated secretariat for the Council  

The main functions of MILE are to:

  1. Set minimum entry qualifications, to be approved by the Council, for persons to enroll at the Institute;
  2. Set and conduct, on behalf of the Council, the Malawi Law examinations;
  3. Organize and conduct courses of instruction for the acquisition of legal knowledge and skills by persons seeking to be admitted as legal practitioners;
  4. Organize and conduct courses in legislative drafting;
  5. Organize and conduct courses for public officers with a view to promoting their general understanding of the law in Malawi;
  6. Organize and conduct courses for paralegals as prescribed by the Council;
  7. Organize and conduct courses for continuing legal education;
  8. Hold seminars and conferences on legal matters;
  9. Award certificates, fellowships, scholarships, bursaries and such other awards as prescribed by the Council; and
  10. Perform such functions as the Council may, from time to time, direct in writing.

MILE was established in 2010 and opened its doors to the first cohort of students on January 1 2018.
