The Malawi Legal Practitioners Qualifying Course (MPLQC) is a one year programme that persons intending to practice as legal practitioners in Malawi must undergo and pass. It is the flagship course for MILE and has eleven subjects. The subjects are; Civil Litigation, Criminal Litigation, Professional Conduct and Ethics, Legal Practice Management, Drafting and Conveyancing, Advocacy, Probate and Administration of Deceased Estates, Business Law and Practice, Conferencing Skills and Practical Legal Research, Resolution of Disputes out of Court and Negotiation Skills and Domestic Relations. Students must pass all subjects to qualify.

During the duration of the MLPQC course, students are attached to government ministries, departments and agencies, private law firms and companies to gain practical experience in law practice.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE MPLQC

The categories of applicants listed below are eligible to apply for admission;

  1. ALL LLB graduates from accredited Malawi public and private universities.
  2. ALL Malawian LLB graduates or holders of equivalent law degrees from accredited Universities in other common law jurisdictions (or Roman-Dutch Law as applied and practised in countries in Southern Africa) who have obtained passes in all the prescribed law subjects which MUST include foundation law subjects: Law of Contract, the Law of Tort, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Land Law, Equity and Trusts, the Law of Evidence and Commercial Law.

How to Apply

ALL applicants are required to send their applications with attached certified copies of academic certificates and certified copies of transcripts showing the subjects taken and the grade obtained in each subject, directly to the Director of MILE in sealed envelopes. It is emphasized for the avoidance of doubt, that no student will be offered admission course without a transcript, authenticated by the Registrar/Academic Dean of his/her University or Institution.
